The History of Adopt A Grandparent

  • Tamika Turner

    President & Founder

Tamika started AAG in 2014 when she volunteered to give free facials to seniors at a retirement community in Greece, NY. She learned from the activities director that the residents had no funds for their Christmas stockings that year. She was inspired by a program from her Mary Kay business and said, "Why don't we adopt the residents?" And so the journey began. She started it in honor of her grandparents, with whom she was very close, and since they are no longer alive, she chooses to honor the very generation who greatly impacted her life. She ran with the idea of celebrating older adults at various nursing homes to show them that their lives matter and that they're not alone. She loves the older generation and all that they have to offer. Her favorite part is seeing the seniors' smiles when they receive their gift bags, knowing that AAG made their day. She also enjoys the fundraisers and spending time with her board members, family, friends, and volunteers because they make AAG a reality. Tamika is a woman who wears many hats, such as being engaged to a wonderful man who supports her vision. She's also a master social worker at Lifespan, a beauty and image consultant with Mary Kay, and enjoys marveling at creation and enjoying life to the fullest.

Warren has a strong background in project management and business development, with a passion for leadership, he dedicates his time, wisdom, and resources to helping nonprofits in the community. Warren met Tamika 3.5 years ago and found a mutual passion for supporting seniors in the community. Tamika, as founder, had already devoted 10 years to AAG's success, and it was time to go to the next level. With Warren's extensive experience in business development, a collaboration was formed with Tamika, which initiated the development of a 501(c)(3) and board of directors who are in service fulfilling AAG's mission. As a team, they are growing and reaching out to as many seniors in the community as possible with gifts and visitations, letting them know that they are appreciated and remembered.

“I joined AAG in October 2020 to make a difference in seniors' lives and make people smile. Many individuals in the facilities don't have a family or someone to care for them, and giving them a gift and talking with them makes such a difference in their day. I joined AAG with Warren, who met Tamika and asked her to join our BNI group at that time. Warren and I worked to help get this program that Tamika had for 9 years to be an organization and helped set it up to be an official 501(c)3, which took off from there. I appreciate working with Tamika, Andrea, and Warren, as they all have the same passion as I do when it comes to giving back and seeing the seniors very happy when we enter their facility. I have had a banking career for over 20 years and spent it in the Retail channel, where I worked my way up from a part-time teller. When I am not working or networking, I love to spend time with my family and friends. My husband and I stay very busy with my 6-year-old's sports activities.”
